About Devin Phillips
Born and reared in New Orleans, the cradle of jazz, Devin Phillips’ intense affair with the saxophone began at the age of eight. At 14, he was accepted into the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, whose alumni include Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr. and Nicholas Payton. There, trained in music theory and multi-styles composition, he graduated in 2000 with top honors.
Performing, touring and recording with top jazz artists, such as Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, The Headhunters, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, musician Lenny Kravitz, and Los Hombres Caliente (with whom he recorded two award-winning albums) soon followed. His reputation as a sax man with intricate and rhythmically innovative sounds made him a popular feature at jazz festivals: France’s Jazz de Vien Festival; Tokyo’s JVC Jazz Festival; Itanbul?s The Ruins; Spain’s Barcelona Jazz Festival; the Netherlands’ North Sea Jazz and the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
Devin brought his saxophone to the Portland after evacuating from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was warmly welcomed by the Portland Jazz Festival and NOLA 2 PDX, a program that invited musicians effected by the hurricane to come to Portland. Since arriving, Devin has performed at many local clubs and has been made a headliner to northwest festivals including the Portland Jazz Festival and Mt. Hood Jazz Festival. His signature sound has been featured on KMHD-fm jazz radio specials and has received numerous write-ups in newspapers, magazines and online articles. Devin’s four-piece ensemble New Orleans Straight Ahead recorded his debut album Wade in the Water, which is now out and gaining momentum. As Jazz Ambassadors, Devin & NOSA earned the dignity of traveling and performing in Africa as part of the Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad program sponsored by the U.S. State Department. This entry was posted in 2011, events and tagged Jazz, Live Music, Mission Theater, Music, Portland.
