Award Winning Saxophonist Miguel Zenón and Quartet
PDX Jazz @ The Mission Theater
Wednesday, November 16 @ 8pm
“Zenón’s quartet is, simply, one of the best bands in jazz today.
You may feel compelled to dance.” – Doug Ramsey, Arts Journal
PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival in partnership with The Mission Theater, along with The Crystal Hotel and our media sponsor KMHD Radio, is set to continue the PDX Jazz @ The Mission Theater series with Miguel Zenón on Wednesday, November 16th at 8pm. The Puerto Rican native will be performing with his New York-based quartet and will conclude this fall’s “World Jazz Wednesdays.”
Zenón’s long-standing working quartet is made up of pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Hans Glawischnig, and drummer Henry Cole. The celebrated saxophonist is no stranger to Portland, he has performed here twice before as a member of the SFJAZZ Collective and as a leader during the 2008 Portland Jazz Festival.
Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón’s esteemed studies of the classical saxophone at San Juan’s Escuela Libre de Musica earned him a scholarship to the Berklee School of Music in Boston. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree at Berklee, Zenón accepted a scholarship to the Master’s program at the Manhattan School of Music. In 2001, shortly after graduating, Zenón formed his own group and has since released six acclaimed albums as a leader, including his 2009 release, Esta Plena, which was nominated for a Grammy® as Best Latin Jazz Album.
His latest album, Alma Adentro: The Puerto Rican Songbook (Marsalis Music) features the renowned sound of his Latin-inflicted jazz. ”This project grew out of my interest in exploring the history and development of The Puerto Rican song,” says Zenón. “I started focusing on the similar characteristics between The Puerto Rican Songbook and The Great American Songbook, not only musically, but also in terms of cultural impact. From there on, the project started to take shape.”
In addition to his solo work, Zenón is a founder of the SFJAZZ Collective, a groundbreaking group featuring jazz heavyweights such as Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Brian Blade, Nicholas Payton, Dave Douglas, and Eric Harland. He has also toured and/or recorded with Charlie Haden, David Sanchez, The Village Vanguard Association, Guillermo Klein y los Gauchos, The Mingus Big Band, and Steve Coleman. Amongst his many awards, Zenón is a Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow.
