Aladdin Theater

Aladdin Theater

3017 Southeast Milwaukie Avenue | Map | Website

The Aladdin Theater was originally the Geller’s Theatre when it opened in 1928. It became the Aladdin in 1930 and was a vaudeville house, playing host to the likes of Jack Benny. The birth of movies saw the demise of vaudeville in the mid 1930’s. For the next 40 years, the Aladdin served as a family movie emporium, before taking a major detour in the 70′s and 80′s serving as an adult movie theater (the number one exhibitor of the X-rated classic Deep Throat). The Aladdin Theater was purchased and renovated by Paul Shuback, of Shuback’s violin shop, in the early 1980’s and in late 1993 Steve Reischman and Sally Custer (then of promotions company Showman, Inc.) began promoting concerts in the theater and thus began it’s rise as the destination in Portland for live music and comedy. Current owner Mark Adler, of True West LLC, continues to build on the many successes of the Aladdin promoting great shows at the Aladdin and in many of Portland and Seattle’s best music venues.

Classic Pianos

Classic Pianos

3003 SE Milwaukie Ave. | Map | Website

n 2001 Maurice Unis and his eldest son, Brian, opened Classic Pianos - next to the Aladdin Theater - at 3003 SE Milwaukie Avenue in a historic building that had earlier housed a violin maker. As soon as the shop was established, there grew up around Classic a very diverse community of piano-related businesses - craftsmen and technicians dedicated to the restoration of fine old instruments, a piano moving company, piano teachers working out of the studios at Classic, and a sheet music business. At the end of 2005, Classic acquired Cascade Music – Portland’s exclusive Yamaha dealership, a Hollywood District landmark for over 40 years. Maurice Unis closed Cascade’s business and consolidated his piano enterprise into his further-expanding Classic Pianos “campus” at the east end of the Ross Island Bridge. The expansion includes a newly remodeled, acoustically-enhanced, Recital Hall that occupies the space adjacent to the Aladdin Theater.

Crystal Ballroom

The Crystal Ballroom enjoys national recognition for a reason. No local venue, and indeed few in the nation, can challenge this elegant ballroom's 90 years as a premier place to hear live music, dance and have memorable experiences. The hall has seen countless first loves unfold, police raids, visits by silent screen idols and Beat poets, psychedelic light shows, narrow escapes from fire, demolition, and neglect, and a listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it is a vital, thriving McMenamins owned and operated live music palace that hosts everything from rock 'n' roll and country, to hip-hop and big band swing.

Self Enhancement, Inc.

Self Enhancement, Inc.

3920 N Kerby Ave | Map | Website

Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI), is a nonprofit organization supporting at-risk urban youth. In 31 years, SEI has grown from a 1-week summer basketball camp to a flourishing agency serving thousands of students each year in the greater Portland, Oregon area, with plans to replicate across the country. Whereas others see only statistics, we see strong individuals, tomorrow’s business owners and leaders, teachers and citizens. We help our students see themselves and their potential the same way. Then we help them find their strengths, ignite their passion and identify the plan that will move them in the direction of their dream. And we stay with them every step of the way, 24/7, 365 days a year from age eight through 25. Mission statements, vision statements, slogans and credos are displayed on walls and web sites all over for-profit and non-profit America. Some are poignant, some are pathetic. We think that too often they are just words that are pointed to now and then. Not here. Students and staff live by the SEI standards from the moment they walk through our doors.

Winningstad Theatre

Winningstad Theatre

1111 Southwest Broadway Ave. | Map | Website

Flexible, innovative and very intimate   This Elizabethan or "black-box" style theater is our most flexible performing space. With 304 seats, the seating and stage can be reconfigured in a variety of ways to suit the artistic form and allow for total audience enjoyment. The versatility and small size of the theater allows for innovative staging and set design. Performances here can extend off the stage and into the balconies, seats can be removed to create additional staging areas. In a sense, the whole room is a stage, and the audiences become part of the drama.

The Dolores Winningstad Theatre Located inside PCPA 1111 SW Broadway (at Main Street) Portland, OR 97205503/248-4335
