Chilean saxophonist Melissa Aldana caught the attention of pianist Danilo Perez early on in her career, with Perez inviting Aldana to study at Berklee College of Music. During her time at Berklee, Aldana started to develop her own voice as a composer, studying with such heavyweights as Joe Lovano, Ralph Peterson, Greg Osby, and George Coleman, and ultimately sharing the stage with Osby, Benny Golson, and Antonio Sanchez.  As the winner of the 2013 Thelonious Monk Competition, Aldana is also the first female instrumentalist to take first prize since the events beginning in 1987. Marking her first Portland appearance, Aldana is joined by her acclaimed Crash Trio featuring bassist Pablo Menares and drummer Francisco Mela who also currently performs with Joe Lovano’s ‘Us Five’ and McCoy Tyner.

“Aldana’s dedication to listening, as well as showing up to play as much as she could, has been key to her recent success.” – NPR ‘A Blog Supreme’
