2010 Jazz Journalists Association Musician of the Year Vijay Iyer is one of today’s brightest and most explorative pianists.  Iyer was born in New York City, but has family roots in India that have informed his music.  With the addition of guitar-composer Prasanna and tabla player Nitin Mitta, the combined forces of modern jazz and Indian-classical music have given Iyer a unique voice.  Iyer and his musical cohorts will make their Portland debut in support of their recently released album, Tirtha. Iyer also participates in a number of other ambitious projects including his forward-thinking trio (bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore) that received top album honors in The New York Times, JazzTimes, and LA Times critics polls for one of the most acclaimed albums of the decade, Historicity.
