There are few musicians that have had the decorated and enduring career of drummer Roy Haynes. Haynes, 86, earned the nickname of “Snap Crackle” in the 1950s for his uniquely punctuated rhythms and use of the snare drum. He has worked with generational jazz goliaths like Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughn, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and countless others. Although most directly associated with bebop and hard swinging jazz; in recent years, Haynes has played with popular rock acts such as The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band, and Phish. One of the most revered drummers of all time, Haynes is an NEA Jazz Master, as well as being named one of Esquire’s Best Dressed Men in America. With his Fountain of Youth Band, Haynes will make and triumphant, much anticipated and long overdue debut as a leader in Portland.
“Calling Roy Haynes a bridge from jazz’s past to its present doesn’t really do the drum legend justice…Haynes keeps shaping jazz’s future.” – Boston Globe
