Channeling the sound and style of Charlie “Bird” Parker, Charles McPherson is one of jazz’s most journeyed alto saxophonists. A product of Detroit’s 1950s jazz heritage, McPherson is known for his work with Charles Mingus and an appearance in Bird, Clint Eastwood’s biopic on Parker. As part of the Festival’s community outreach in celebration of Black History Month, the protean saxophonist will also lead workshops with Alan Jones’ AJAM, Ben Medler’s Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra (PYJO), Derek Sims’ Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) and the Portland State University Jazz Group. McPherson will also participate in a Jazz Conversation followed by a set supported by the Randy Porter Trio, paying tribute to Charlie”Bird” Parker and Lester “Prez” Young.
